Dennis Smith, an attorney and former Republican state legislator, announced his campaign for attorney general last week.

“I’m running for Attorney General to build a future Minnesotans deserve,” Smith said in a press release. “For too long, the office of Attorney General has been used for politics, and that must end!”

The position is currently occupied by Democrat Keith Ellison, whose office led the successful prosecution of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

Smith, a military veteran from Osseo, was elected to the Minnesota House in 2014 and served two terms. He said public safety and Big Tech censorship would be among his top priorities as the state’s chief legal officer.

“We’re facing many challenges and we’ve lost trust in government, in our institutions, and in each other. I’ll be a voice for every Minnesotan so they can once again have trust in their elected officials to always do right,” Smith said.

Smith is the second Republican seeking to challenge Ellison for the position. Doug Wardlow, who lost to Ellison in 2018, announced his campaign in February.

“Most importantly, I have a record of implementing conservative principles. I’ll go toe to toe with the other side to fight back against the cancel culture and mob mentality who would rather burn our cities down than find solutions to our problems,” Smith added.

Ellison left a safe seat in Congress to run for attorney general and defeated Wardlow by four points despite allegations of domestic abuse by ex-girlfriend Karen Monahan.

He is currently fighting a lawsuit seeking to unseal documents related to his office’s hiring of a lawyer who is paid by left-wing donors such as Michael Bloomberg.
