Minnesota Teen Activists Group Walks Out of School in Protest over Amir Locke Death

Minnesota Teen Activists announced Tuesday that it would be co-hosting a walkout on behalf of Amir Locke, who was shot and killed by a Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) officer during a raid last Wednesday.

The group clarified in an email to The Minnesota Sun the logo on the event poster is “not New England [P]atriots … it’s [the] Central High School Logo, [and] their Black Student Union is the host.” The activists also said their group is co-hosting the event alongside the Black Student Union.

According to a press release, the goal of the walkout is to list demands regarding policing in Minneapolis. It even demands the resignations of high-profile officials.

The following are the demands:

  1. Ban ALL no-knock warrants
  2. Full transparency and a full overhaul and demilitarization of MPD
  3. Full review of MPD and SWAT practices
  4. Resignation of police chief interim Huffman and Mayor [Jacob] Frey
  5. Accountability of Judge Peter Cahill, the same judge for the Chauvin trial, who signed the no-knock warrant in the Locke case
  6. Termination of officer [sic] Mark Hanneman

Hanneman is the officer who shot Locke. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has also called for Henneman’s termination. He is currently on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

The students from Central High School marched to the Governor’s Mansion, where they held a press conference and rally.

Video of the march shows a large group chanting “We are the students, the mighty, mighty students,” as they walk.

The Sun requested video of the press conference at the Governor’s Mansion from the student activists, but it was not immediately made available.

Minneapolis police and police in surrounding areas have been bogged down with controversies for almost two years. Former MPD officer Derek Chauvin was convicted last year of murder in the 2020 death of George Floyd. Brooklyn Center Police officer Kimberly Potter faces sentencing on February 18 after her manslaughter conviction in the 2021 death of Daunte Wright.

The area has become America’s epicenter for what left-wing activists call “police reform.”

Locke was shot and killed after an MPD raid on an apartment where he was staying. Body camera footage shows him picking up a handgun just before he was shot and killed.
