Tom Tancredo Commentary: Never Let a Manufactured Constitutional Crisis Go to Waste

by Tom Tancredo

The Democrats are right that our country is facing a “constitutional crisis,” but only because they manufactured it themselves. And Democrats never let a crisis go to waste.

Ever since the release of the redacted Mueller report that exonerated President Trump, the Democrats have been demanding that Attorney General William Barr release the full, unredacted document to Congress, along with all “underlying materials.” Barr refused to give in, arguing that federal laws and regulations preclude releasing certain information, enraging Nadler and the other Democrats on the committee, who voted to hold him in contempt of Congress.

“We’ve talked for a long time about approaching a constitutional crisis,” Nadler remarked. “We are now in it.”

Nancy Pelosi echoed Nadler’s remarks, but while she adamantly insisted that the country is in the midst of a constitutional crisis, she also made it clear that she’s in no rush to do anything about it, preferring to wait until she’s confident that her Democrats will be able to take down Barr.

Let’s be perfectly clear, though — Barr has done absolutely nothing wrong, and certainly nothing to precipitate a “constitutional crisis.” The only constitutional crisis we’re facing is the one that the Democrats created by demanding that the Attorney General of the United States violate federal law in order to provide them with material they hope will be politically useful.

Democrats like Nadler keep accusing the Trump administration of promoting “lawlessness,” yet they are the ones who are aggressively urging Barr to break the law and his own department’s regulations by releasing sensitive grand jury and national security materials.

The real reason that the Democrats are holding Barr in contempt is because Mueller found no collusion in his extensive Russia investigation, and they’re frustrated that the attorney general didn’t spin the news in their favor.

The ongoing circus in Congress was never about getting to the so-called “truth” about the Mueller report — after all, leading Democrat lawmakers had access to an almost-entirely unredacted version of the report for days before their political assault against Barr, but none of them bothered to read it because they know full well that it won’t reveal anything meaningful.

The Democrats will continue to hold partisan hearings and demand additional investigations, but their only purpose is to distract the American people from far more important questions: Was the Federal Bureau of Investigation spying on Donald Trump’s campaign? Why wasn’t the Trump Campaign extensively briefed on the Russia threat? Why didn’t President Obama take concrete steps to prevent Russian election interference?

To this day, these questions remain unanswered.

Representative Jerry Nadler is right that America is facing a real “constitutional crisis,” but that’s only half the story. The real perpetrators of this crisis are the Democrats who have been unjustly slandering President Trump and his administration ever since he won the 2016 election.

Democrats hate to let a good crisis go to waste, especially one that they’ve spent so much time and effort manufacturing.
