Former President Donald Trump’s support among black men has increased in battleground states ahead of the 2024 election by more than double his support among the same group in 2020’s election, according to a poll published on Thursday by The Wall Street Journal.
Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has long sought to gain support among black voters, traditionally a Democratic-supporting demographic, by touting his record on the economy and criminal justice reform while in office, among other matters. A recent poll estimated that 30 percent of black men in seven battleground states — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — “definitely or probably” plan to vote for Trump in November’s election, an increase of 18 percent from his nationwide performance among that demographic in 2020, where he earned 12 percent of their votes, the Journal reported.
Trump’s support among black women also increased by a smaller amount, to 11 percent in the current poll from 6 percent in 2020, the Journal reported. Among college-educated black voters, Trump’s support increased by ten percentage points to 18 percent currently from 8 percent in 2020, while support among black voters without a college education increased by 12 percentage points to 21 percent.

“[President Joe] Biden is further off than where we have seen Democrats in the past,” said Michael Bocian, one of the pollsters who conducted the survey for the Journal. “I think winning back more Black men is going to be key for him.”
On average, Trump leads Biden by 0.2 percentage points nationally, according to RealClearPolitics. When third-party candidates such as Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Cornel West and Green Party candidate Jill Stein are included, Trump’s lead increases to 1.9 percentage points on average.
Trump also leads Biden among polls of young voters ages 18-35, according to Politico, a major shift from the last election when Biden won this voting bloc.
The poll was conducted between March 17 and 24, 2024 and surveyed between 218 and 354 registered voters. The margin of error ranged between 5.2 and 6.6 percentage points.
The Trump and Biden presidential campaigns did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
