Vice President Kamala Harris will take control of the party tonight at the Democratic National Convention as she accepts the nomination for president.
After days of protests, most calling for an end to U.S. military support to Israel, Harris will give the headlining speech as the four-day convention in Chicago comes to a close.
Before Harris speaks, other Democrats will take the stage, including former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Marcia Fudge, U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.
Democratic officials said Thursday morning they wouldn’t be taking any votes for granted ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election.
Campaign officials also said that the Democratic party welcomes Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s supporters amid rumors that independent candidate could drop out and endorse former President Donald Trump.
“There’s a home for them” with the Harris campaign, said campaign communications director Michael Tyler.
Tyler also said it was “no surprise” that Kennedy would endorse Trump. Kennedy has been trailing in the polls and needs more support to qualify for TV debates.
Tyler said Harris’ Thursday night speech will address her vision for the nation’s future.
“An American where the middle class won’t just get by, but will get ahead,” he said.
U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., said Americans are tired of the “politics of demeaning and degrading” about Trump’s practice of belittling others. Booker pointed to Trump’s comments about members of his own party, including making fun of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ height and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s weight. Trump’s latest campaign nickname for Harris is “Comrade Kamala.”
Booker said Harris’ speech on the final night of the convention would focus on policy issues, including issues such as health care, environmental justice, and farmers’ economic instability. He said Harris would “share her heart with America to appeal to the better nature of our angels.”
Booker also said that while some Black men may turn to Trump, Harris’ accession to the top of the ticket has shifted that dynamic. Black men have traditionally voted Democratic, but early polls this year showed that 20% to 30% could vote for Trump. But Booker said things have changed.
“All the polls I’ve seen – it’s shifted and I’m feeling it in our communities,” Booker said.
As for Trump, he plans to troll Harris all night on Truth Social, his social media platform.
“I will be doing a LIVE PLAY BY PLAY on TRUTH Social of Comrade Kamala Harris’ Speech tonight at the Democrat National Convention in Chicago,” Trump wrote Thursday morning. “We will start at 10 P.M., Eastern, and be covering and commenting on some of the earlier Speeches made, prior to hers. She became the Nominee without receiving one Vote, stealing the Nomination from Crooked Joe Biden who earned it by getting 14 Million Votes. I am no fan of Biden, who was the Worst President in the History of the United States and, likewise, she is considered to be the Worst Vice President (and Border ‘Czar’) in the History of the United States, but Biden got ‘shafted.’ We will expose all of her Radicalism, the horrible job she did at the Border, Crime, and Foreign Relations, and her Weaponization against her Political Opponent, using corrupt Prosecutors and Courts in New York, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta.”
