House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), in his bid to become the next Speaker of the House of Representatives, said on Sunday that if elected, he would form a select committee to investigate China.
As reported by the Washington Free Beacon, McCarthy declared that the Biden Administration is not doing enough to stand up to the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its leader, newly-reelected President Xi Jingping.
“China is the No. 1 country when it comes to intellectual property theft,” said McCarthy in an interview. “We will put a stop to this and no longer allow the administration to sit back and let China do what they are doing to America.”
In addition to China’s numerous acts of international aggression, ranging from intellectual property theft to using its economic strength to get key sectors of the American domestic economy, new reports suggest that China has set up numerous police-state “service stations” in major cities across the world in order to further spread CCP propaganda.
In September, the European human rights organization Safeguard Defenders published a report detailing the presence of dozens of such “service stations” in cities like New York, which are part of the CCP’s efforts to pressure Chinese nationals into returning to China so they can face criminal charges for defying the state.
In response, the Chinese embassy in Washington acknowledged the existence of such “volunteer-run” stations but denied that they were “police stations.” The statement claimed that such sites exist in order to “assist Chinese nationals who need help in accessing the online service platform to get their driving licenses renewed and receive physical check-ups for that purpose.”
The promise of a select committee is one of several major campaign promises that McCarthy has made in recent days in an effort to convince the new razor-thin GOP majority to support him for Speaker. McCarthy, who faced opposition for the Speaker nomination from conservative firebrand Congressman Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), is looking at a majority that will be anywhere from 3 to 5 seats above the minimum majority threshold of 2018, meaning he can afford virtually no dissent in his bid for Speaker.
McCarthy has also vowed to kick several prominent radical Democrats from key committee assignments, including Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from the Foreign Affairs Committee, and Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) from the Intelligence Committee.
