Klobuchar Says She’s Open to Beginning Impeachment Proceedings

Sen. Amy Klobuchar told CNN Friday morning that she’s open to starting impeachment proceedings “beginning now.”

“First of all, I think it’s illegal. You can’t take things of value from a foreign country and use them in your campaign,” Klobuchar said.

The comments were made in response to President Donald Trump’s recent claim that he would “listen” if a foreign government approached him with information on an opponent.

“I think you might want to listen,” Trump said in an ABC interview. “There isn’t anything wrong with listening.”

Klobuchar told CNN’s “New Day” that Trump is inviting “people to interfere in the election.”

“I would support impeachment proceedings beginning now, but I also understand that they may want to be doing investigations leading up to it and I think they should be given the time to do that,” the Minnesota senator claimed.

“Our forefathers fought so hard to have an election and a democracy that was free of foreign interference. That is what we are going to be celebrating as a country on Fourth of July. And yet this is a president that doesn’t seem to think that matters,” she added.

Klobuchar was on Late Night with Seth Meyers Thursday night where she made similar remarks about beginning impeachment proceedings.

“Well, I think there could be impeachment and personally what I look at when I look at this evidence, I see impeachment,” she said. “However, I think the House right now has to be able to finish their investigation, right? They’re starting to call witnesses, they have one coming before them. That’s really important.”

Klobuchar joins a long list of Democrats calling for impeachment, including fellow 2020 candidates Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, Beto O’Rourke, Tim Ryan, Cory Booker, and Kamala Harris.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN-05) has long been a supporter of impeaching the president.

“One word: impeachment,” Omar wrote on Twitter Thursday.
