Minnesota Surpasses 100,000 Breakthrough Cases of COVID-19

Minnesota has now surpassed 100,000 COVID-19 breakthrough cases, the Department of Health announced Monday.

103,764 fully-vaccinated Minnesotans have tested positive for the virus; 4,299 of them have been hospitalized and 737 have died.

The state has added 9,093 breakthrough cases since last Monday, when there were a total of 94,671.

The Minnesota Department of Health releases data on breakthrough events just once a week (every Monday). Last Monday there were 94,671 breakthrough cases, 655 deaths, and 3,922 hospitalizations. Now there are 103,764 breakthrough cases, 4,299 hospitalizations, and 737 deaths.

The percentage of fully-vaccinated Minnesotans who have tested positive for the virus now sits at 3.149%, up from 2.885% last week.

State health officials confirmed at a press conference last month that “waning immunity” among the vaccinated, which leads to breakthrough COVID-19 cases, is playing a role in the state’s pandemic surge.

That surge resulted in 6,122 newly reported cases and 38 newly reported deaths Monday.

Minnesota reported the nation’s second case of the omicron variant last week, but the delta variant continues to drive the surge in cases. The omicron case was discovered in a fully-vaccinated and boosted Minnesotan.
