A new poll from RealClearPolitics shows that a staggering number of registered Democrats think there is “too much freedom” to speak freely in the United States.
As reported by the Washington Free Beacon, the RCP survey on Friday revealed that 34% of Democrats believe that Americans have “too much freedom” of speech, compared to just 14.6% of Republicans who believed the same. By contrast, 46% of Republicans believe that Americans have “too little freedom,” with only 22% of Democrats agreeing.
When asked if speech should be legal “under any circumstances,” 74% of Republicans agreed, while a narrow majority of Democrats, 53%, expressed the same sentiment. Another narrow majority of Democrats, 52%, voiced their support for censorship on social media, saying that the government should be allowed to censor social media posts in the name of protecting “national security.” Only a third of Republicans agreed with this stance.
At least three-fourths of Democrat respondents declared that the government “has a responsibility” to suppress speech that they consider to be “disinformation” and hate speech; only 50% of Republicans agreed.
Since taking power, the Biden Administration has made numerous attempts to suppress dissenting speech. Last year, the Department of Homeland Security attempted to launch a “Disinformation Governance Board,” with a far-left partisan named Nina Jankowicz as its chair; the board was dissolved after just four months due to widespread backlash. Subsequent efforts by the Biden Administration to collude with Big Tech companies in efforts to systematically censor conservatives have been blocked by federal judges as an overreach of power.
