OB/GYN Dr. Christina Francis: ‘Abortion Supporters Have No Scientific Evidence’ to Back Up Their Position

Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last month, the abortion industry and its allies in the media and the medical field “are having to defend their actual position” regarding their claim that women are in danger as a result of the ruling, but “have no scientific evidence to back it up,” leaving them to “rely on spreading” lies, OB/GYN Dr. Christina Francis asserted to The Star News Network in an interview Thursday.

Francis, a board member and CEO-elect of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG), testified Tuesday before the House Committee on Energy & Commerce in a Democrat-led hearing titled “Roe Reversal: The Impacts of Taking Away the Constitutional Right to an Abortion.”

Francis said what struck her the most about the hearing was that the pro-abortion side “just kept saying, ‘the evidence shows’ or ‘the experts say,’ but they never quoted a single study.”

“In fact, the physicians never quoted a single study,” she said, observing that one Democrat witness, Renee Bracey Sherman, executive director of the pro-abortion group We Testify, “quoted the Turnaway Study, which has multiple flaws in it. But that was the only peer reviewed evidence that was ever actually presented during the hearing on their side, and I presented several studies, not only in my spoken comments, but also in my written testimony that I presented.”

“Yet, I was accused of spreading misinformation, even though nothing that I said is not backed up by peer-reviewed evidence,” Francis added. “They don’t have evidence to back it up, and they’re having to rely on spreading the lie that women are not going to be able to be treated for things like ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage, which is simply not true. But that’s their only defense for their abortion position.”

Francis said the pro-abortion witnesses failed to discuss the nature of their actual position, which is, she said, “elective abortion on demand with no restrictions.”

“But they weren’t even willing to talk about that,” she stated.

Democrats convened the hearing in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on June 24 in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, in which the Court held:

The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.

A White House “fact sheet” providing information about Joe Biden’s executive order attempting to undermine the Court’s ruling also appears to fearmonger by implying the Dobbs decision has somehow blocked “pregnant women and those experiencing pregnancy loss” from receiving “the full rights and protections for emergency medical care afforded under the law.”

Francis, an associate scholar at the pro-life Charlotte Lozier Institute, responded to the “misinformation” by radical pro-abortion politicians and lobbyists:

My heart is breaking that women are being made to feel fearful by the misinformation that’s out there. Treating ectopic pregnancies or miscarriages or other life-threatening conditions in pregnancy is not the same thing as an abortion. Chemical abortions, which are being heavily promoted by the abortion industry and its allies, cannot treat an ectopic pregnancy according to the FDA. The treatments for ectopic pregnancy are not the same procedures used by induced abortions, which even Planned Parenthood admits. As a pro-life OB/GYN who’s practiced my entire career in hospitals that do not allow abortions, I have never been prevented from safely treating an ectopic pregnancy.

“In the rare but tragic situations where a pregnancy puts the mother’s life at risk, there are medical procedures for compassionately separating the mother and her baby and working to save both lives,” Francis added. “The only intent of an abortion is to produce a dead baby. Women deserve to be empowered by medically-accurate information.”

Representative Michael Burgess (R-TX-26), a former OB/GYN, also commented recently on the Democrats’ attempt to fearmonger about the effects of overturning Roe v. Wade on women:

Francis told The Star News Network the bulk of the medical literature “shows abortion harms women and ends the life of an innocent human being.”

The OB/GYN noted the pro-abortion side often “cherry-picks” studies “that are very small, like the Turnaway Study, which only looked at just over 500 women and had an 83% dropout rate – which any researcher will tell you is sort of a fatal flaw of a study because of the self-selection bias that occurs.”

“Those are the only studies that the pro-abortion side can quote, to say that abortion does not harm women, you know, from a mental health perspective,” she asserted. “There are multiple studies, including 168, that show a link between abortion and preterm birth.”

“So, I would encourage, specifically, any medical professionals that are reading this piece, to actually do a deep dive themselves into the literature, and not to just listen to ACOG [American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology], which has a clear political agenda when it comes to the issue of abortion.”
