Whitmer Reportedly Lone Governor Preventing Big 10 Football

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer could be a “major roadblock” to the start of the Big 10 football season, according to Ohio State insider Jeff Snook.

The Spun reported that Snook is saying that Whitmer against University of Michigan playing football.

“I was also told that one roadblock to the new plan is the fact that Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has been vehemently opposed to football being played – at the high school and college level – in the state this fall,” Snook said, adding that Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine already “gave his blessing.”

Whitmer’s objection could keep the football teams from both University of Michigan and Michigan State University from playing. The governor said during a press conference in May that fans would not be able to attend fall sporting events, according to The Free Beacon.

The Big 10 canceled its football season on August 11 after a meeting of the conference’s presidents, CBS Sports reported. Pac-12 also announced that its seasons is canceled, while the SEC, the Big 12 and the ACC will continue with modified seasons, according to USA Today.

Trafalgar Group’s Robert Cahaly argued last week that the cancellation of the Big 10 football season could have an impact on the 2020 presidential election.

“How people perceive the coronavirus is defining their politics. If you believe it’s a hoax or you think it’s overblown you’re in the Trump corner. If you believe everything needs to be shutdown and you won’t leave your home until there’s a vaccine you’re in the Biden corner,” he told CNN’s Michael Smerconish, FITS News reported. “But if you’re in the middle – and there’s a growing group that says ‘hey, we’re going to do what we can to be safe and protect our families but we’re gonna live our life’ – well, that group is growing, and how that group moves and how they perceive the candidates absolutely is going to determine how they vote.”

The Michigan High School Athletic Association has canceled its fall football season, tentatively postponing until the spring, Breitbart reported.
