Commentary: Senate GOP Needs a Spine Transplant

by CHQ Staff

Our friends at the Daily Caller contacted all 53 Republican Senate offices Monday and Tuesday to ask if senators would rule out voting to remove Trump from office, and astonishingly only seven senators explicitly rejected impeachment in their statement to the DC.

Of course, the Utah weasel Mitt Romney pointed to his previous statement that he’s open to impeaching the President and has judged Trump’s conversation with the President of Ukraine “wrong and appalling.”

Sen. Thom Tillis (who has been a somewhat spotty supporter of the President) to the surprise of many completely rejected impeachment, saying in a statement from his staff, “Senator Tillis has reviewed the transcript and the complaint and strongly believes there is zero-basis to even entertain the impeachment of the President.”

“Democrats have been trying to impeach President Trump from the moment he was elected, and they continue to play partisan political games to try to overturn the results of the 2016 election and influence the 2020 election,” the Tillis statement reads. “Democrats are taking a page out of the Kavanaugh playbook by flooding the zone with baseless allegations and denying any sort of due process.”

But judging by the reporting by Daily Caller contributors Justin Caruso and Henry Rodgers (which you can read through this link) most of the Senate Republicans seemed to take the line of North Dakota Sen. Kevin Cramer who told The Caller in a statement, “The whole point of the Senate’s role is to serve as a jury while evidence is presented. I won’t prejudice that responsibility by answering a hypothetical question.”

In other words, “I’m too awesomely Senatorial to dirty my hands by defending the duly elected Republican President by engaging in the same kind of cutthroat politics Democrats are engaging in to drive him from office.”

To be fair, Senator Cramer, who is generally a solid conservative, did go on to say, “The House should not present articles of impeachment without evidence to support such an awesome responsibility. So far they appear on a three-year fishing expedition.”

But one after another the Republican Senators all seemed to fall back on the “dignity of the Senate” argument to avoid actually getting into the battle to defend President Trump from the House Democrats’ anti-constitutional effort to overturn the 2016 election.

By way of contrast, House Republicans have, with a few notable exceptions, grown spines and are actively fighting the Democrats on multiple fronts.

Rep. Andy Biggs, Chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, introduced a resolution to censure House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff for, among other things, lying to the House. Naturally the Democrats used their majority to shoot it down, but the points of Adam Schiff’s serial lying and Speaker Pelosi’s aiding and abetting him were made.

Rep. Matt Gaetz appears regularly on TV to defend the President and attack the Democrats and yesterday led a group of Republicans to enter the dungeon in the House basement where Schiff is conducting his Star Chamber inquisition. The group included senior House Republicans, such as Minority Whip Steve Scalise, who went to Schiff’s secret lair to confront him in person.

BREAKING: Florida’s Republican Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott criticized Rep. Gaetz for demanding transparency and defending President Trump, thus proving our point.

Minority Whip Scalise has also launched a series of social media attacks on Schiff for denying members access to the information being developed by his inquisition, most recently Scalise tweeted:

75% of the Representatives in the House are being denied access to these impeachment proceedings.

That means 230 MILLION Americans are unrepresented and have their voices silenced in this process.

Time for Schiff’s impeachment-in-secret scheme to end.

You deserve transparency!

Republican Rep. Devin Nunes, the Ranking Member on the House Intelligence Committee, has also been out front on TV and on social media. Nunes appeared on Sean Hannity to knockdown the headlines about former diplomat William Taylor’s secret testimony.

Texas Rep. John Ratcliffe “destroyed” Taylor during the closed-door deposition, said Nunes. Nunes said leaks that led to headlines about how the diplomat said President Trump tied security aid for Ukraine to investigations into the Biden family are misleading. “The truth is, in two minutes, John Ratcliffe destroyed this witness. There is no quid pro quo,” Nunes told Hannity.

It’s time Republican Senators got a spine transplant from House Members like Reps. Andy Biggs, Matt Gaetz, Steve Scalise, Devin Nunes and John Ratcliffe. We urge CHQ readers and friends to call Republican Senators, the toll-free Capitol Switchboard number is (1-866-220-0044). Tell them that you want them in the fight to defend President Trump from the Democrats’ anti-constitutional effort to overturn the 2016 election. Tell them this is a fight to the death for the future of constitutional government and you want them in it on President Trump’s side.
