Tina Smith Continues Her Month Long Attack of Mitch McConnell: ‘A Big Fat Waste’

Minnesota Senator Tina Smith appeared on the “AM Joy Show” Monday where she continued her attack of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). During her appearance, she told host Joy Reid that McConnell would “continue to obstruct.”

“There are places rank and file members of the Senate, Republicans and Democrats, who want to work together, it’s just that there’s a big no from the Senate Majority Leader,” she said.

Last week, Smith published an op-ed on CNN criticizing the Kentucky Senator. In the opinion piece, she called his Senate leadership a “big fat waste.”

“And let’s be clear that the problem isn’t that senators on both sides of the aisle can’t agree on anything. Truth is, there’s plenty of work we could be doing – if only Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would let us,” the senator wrote.

She said that “McConnell has transformed the Senate into little more than the Trump administration’s personnel office, the place where good ideas go to die.” To illustrate, she noted that between April 3 and July 3 just 21 of the Senate’s 127 votes related to legislation, which is only 16.5 percent.

“I had always heard that Mitch McConnell was a master legislator and a true loyalist to this institution. But in the 18 months I’ve been in the Senate, what I’ve seen is an astonishingly limited vision for what the Senate can and should accomplish. What a waste,” the Minnesota Senator wrote.

Since July 9 on Twitter, Smith has tweeted five times about him.

In one tweet, she replied to a New York Times opinion piece called “Hey Democrats, What About the Senate.”

“To stop the confirmation of right-wing judges, we need to take back the Senate. To put an end to the attacks on reproductive rights, we need to take back the Senate. To save our environment, we need to take back the Senate,” the tweet read.

Also, she has tweeted her CNN opinion piece twice in the last week criticizing McConnell .

“I recognize a waste when I see it & that’s exactly what is going on with McConnell’s leadership in the Senate. I know I have Republican colleagues ready to take action on the issues that matter most to you – all that’s standing in the way is McConnell,” the July 12 tweet said.

“Last week the Senate didn’t take a single vote on legislation. But it isn’t because of lack of interest from Republicans and Democrats. There’s an obstacle in the way: McConnell,” yesterday’s tweet said.
