Biden Admin Working with Chicago to Help Migrants Get Work Permits amid Immigration Crisis

The Biden administration is helping Chicago launch a program to get migrants to work, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The pilot program will begin Thursday to help the city and state with the strain migrants have been placing on public resources, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The program will serve as “a one-stop-shop to help ease the strain migrants are putting on the city shelter system, Angelo Fernández Hernández, a White House spokesperson, told the Chicago Sun-Times.

“The clinic will begin with a pilot, serving approximately 150 migrants per day, and we will work with the state, city and the Resurrection Project as they scale in the coming days and weeks,” Fernández Hernández told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The Biden administration committed to working with the state of New York in August to begin a similar campaign, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, which reported that another program in Boston is in the works.

In Chicago, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will deploy roughly 12 staffers to help migrants get work permits, according to the Sun-Times.

Illegal immigration at the southern border continues to surge. The number of migrants that got into the U.S. after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally is larger than the populations of 11 states, a Daily Caller News Foundation review of fiscal year 2023 data found.

There is a 180-day required waiting period before migrants can receive work authorization.

In Chicago, thousands of migrants are arriving on buses from Colorado and Texas. Some of them have been sheltered in police stations.
