Father of Man Shot by Police Calls for ‘Destroying The System’ at BLM Protest

The father of a man who was fatally shot by Minneapolis police in December called for “destroying the system” at a Black Lives Matter protest Friday in St. Paul.

“There is something I would like to say today: police, it’s not only the police who kill our people. It is the system. It’s the system. This whole system, it is sucking our blood,” said the father of Dolal Idd, who died of multiple gunshot wounds after firing a weapon at police.

Both Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Idd fired at officers first, which was seemingly corroborated by body camera footage from the incident.

“We have to fight back until we get our justice,” said Idd’s father, Bayle Gelle, who claimed the Minneapolis Police Department doesn’t “want to talk” about his son’s case.

“The system is not right. We have to destroy the system and we have to get our rights,” he added as protesters cheered.

His comments were made during a “Justice for George Floyd” march Friday evening from the Capitol building to the Cathedral of St. Paul. Black Lives Matter is scheduled to hold another rally Sunday night outside Gov. Tim Walz’s Summit Avenue residence.

According to an event description for Sunday’s “Justice for Dolal Idd” protest, the investigation into his death is “still open” and his family has been “unable to get even basic questions about the investigation answered.”

“This is a critical moment to mobilize behind Dolal’s father, Bayle Gelle, and raise questions about the investigation and doubts about the police narrative of events, which have all claimed that the shooting was justified,” the description states.

Black Lives Matter Minnesota has also released a new list of demands that calls for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin’s conviction in the death of George Floyd.
