Republican Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler has turned over documents related to controversy over her stock-trading to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Department of Justice and the Senate Ethics Committee, according to Politico.
The documents she submitted show that both she and her husband Jeffry Sprecher “acted entirely appropriately and observed both the letter and the spirit of the law,” a spokeswoman for Loeffler said in a statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation.
“The documents and information demonstrated her and her husband’s lack of involvement in their managed accounts, as well the details of those accounts,” spokesperson said in the statement.
Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr announced Thursday that he would step down from his position after the Federal Bureau of Intelligence issued a warrant for his cell phone. Burr, a North Carolina Republican, has come under fire for stock transactions made after he also received a private briefing on the coronavirus, Politico reports. He denies any wrongdoing.
Loeffler has pushed back on accusations that she used information she received during a coronavirus briefing to sell of millions of dollars in stocks before the looming pandemic negatively impacted the markets. Loeffler has said that third parties controlled her portfolio.
“This is a political attack that is designed to distract from the issue at hand and to use this outbreak to play politics,” Loeffler said in April. “We have addressed this and taken extraordinary measures to make sure that we can’t be attacked for our success. This gets at the very heart of why I came to Washington, to defend free enterprise, to defend capitalism, and this is a socialist attack.”
Loeffler did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
