The number of Americans who view Minneapolis as a safe city has declined by 15%, according to a new Gallup poll.
A majority of Americans (58%) still view Minneapolis as a safe place to “live in or visit,” but this is down from the 73% who said the same in 2006, the last time the poll was conducted.
“Several cities are now much more likely to be considered safe than in 2006 — New Orleans, Miami, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. At the same time, Americans are significantly less likely than they were in 2006 to say Chicago, San Francisco, Minneapolis and Seattle are safe,” Gallup explained.
Minneapolis, San Francisco, and Seattle have seen 15- to 18-point declines in their “perceived safety,” Gallup said.
Of the 16 cities surveyed, Minneapolis ranks sixth, behind Dallas, Boston, Seattle, Las Vegas, and Miami. Majorities of Americans view Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York as unsafe.
“U.S. adults’ partisanship greatly affects their views of the safety of most of the cities included in the July 3-27 Gallup poll,” Gallup said.
For Minneapolis, 76% of Democrats and 41% of Republicans think the city is safe.
