Trump Attempts Something No Republican Has Done in Minnesota Since 1972

President Donald Trump’s campaign has increased its efforts in Minnesota as Trump tries to become the first Republican to win the state since Richard Nixon in 1972.

“That’s a tough state, we’re gonna go fight there. Yeah, we’re gonna be in there now. We weren’t in there in 2016 as much. We’re gonna go in there more,” Brad Parscale, the president’s campaign manager, told CBS News.

The president has made sure to pay extra attention to Minnesota as a key swing state by hiring Tim Lagerman to lead the campaign in Minnesota. Previously, Lagerman worked as a Pennsylvania Republican Party political director.

Trump visited the state for the third time in April. During his visit, he said he could have won Minnesota if he had visited more often.

“This has been a very special state. It has been a rare victory for Republicans. And we almost won it,” Trump said.

However, DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin released a statement after Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign announcement, saying the north star state will not turn red anytime soon.

“Minnesotans won’t stand for another four years of the rich getting richer while everyone else continues to fall behind, and that’s all we’ll get from Donald Trump. The Minnesota DFL will continue organizing and campaigning hard every day to make Trump a one-term president.”

People in Minnesota have changed their opinion on Trump since he first took office. When he started out, Trump had a 43 percent disapproval rating but that number now stands at 56 percent, according to Morning Consult.

Currently, some polls show the president losing to Democrats in the general election. However, Parscale calls these polls the “biggest joke in politics” and “the fakest thing.”

“Polling can’t understand the abilities we have to turn out voters. That is why it was so wrong in 2016,” Parscale said.
