A new poll from The Star Tribune found that Minnesotans are split on the issue of impeaching President Donald Trump.
The poll shows that 48 percent of Minnesotans oppose impeachment while 47 percent support it. The Star Tribune notes that the difference is within the poll’s 3.5 percentage point error margin, meaning Minnesotans are deadlocked on the issue.
Younger voters were more likely to favor the impeachment inquiry, with 60 percent of Minnesotans between the ages of 18 and 34 expressing support for the effort. That’s compared to 57 percent of voters between the ages of 50 and 64 who oppose impeachment.
Like young voters, women were also more likely to say they support impeaching the president. Half of the poll’s female respondents supported impeachment, compared to 43 percent of men.
Forty percent of Minnesota respondents said they approve of President Trump’s job performance, compared to a national average approval rating of 42.7 percent. Additionally, 60 percent of Minnesota voters surveyed for the poll said the president “doesn’t generally tell the truth.”
The Star Tribune polled 800 registered voters in Minnesota for its survey between October 14 and October 16, the week after the president was in Minneapolis for a campaign rally.
The Trump campaign recently told The Minnesota Sun that it’s taking the state “very seriously” and believes the president can win Minnesota in 2020. The campaign plans to spend up to $30 million in Minnesota, but spent just $40,000 in the state in 2016. They already have 20 paid staffers on the ground in Minnesota and plan to increase that number to 100 by the beginning of next year, but The Star Tribune’s poll shows President Trump will face an uphill battle with female voters.
“We already have staff on the ground in Minnesota now and are building out an infrastructure of paid and volunteers in Minnesota,” a senior Trump campaign official told The Sun. “You can just see with that record turnout for the president’s rally last week we’re obviously going to be competitive in Minnesota.”
