Potentially Dangerous Minnesota County Court Order Reversed Just Three Weeks After Being Issued

A recently enacted Hennepin County Court policy that could have had deadly or dangerous results for domestic abuse victims was suddenly reversed over the weekend.

In mid-June, Hennepin County District Court’s Chief Judge Kerry Meyer issued a Standing Order altering the pre-appearance release procedures and bail for some domestic abuse suspects. The order replaced a prior Standing Order that had been in place since 2019 that required suspects arrested on probable cause misdemeanor or gross misdemeanor domestic assault charges to be held without bail until they were brought before a judge to have bail and/or conditions set, such as a no-contact order with the victim.

A Minneapolis man who allegedly attempted to rape a woman in a downtown bathroom was bailed out by the Minnesota Freedom Fund and arrested three days later when he was caught masturbating in front of children.

According to Crime Watch Minneapolis, Gregory Jones, 28, was arrested on Christmas after being charged in a Nov. 8 attack on a woman at O’Donovan’s Irish Pub. Jones allegedly snuck up on a woman in the bathroom, put his hand over her mouth, grabbed her around the waist and dragged her backwards.

Hennepin County Jail Unable to Book Criminals with Warrants from Other Counties

Hennepin County Jail is reportedly refusing to book suspects with warrants from other counties. In audio from the local police scanner, obtained by Crime Watch Minneapolis, the dispatcher can be heard announcing that “for the next two weeks, Hennepin Jail is not taking anyone with just warrants from outside Hennepin County.”

Recovered Carjacked Vehicle Processing Backed Up Five to Six Weeks, Police Say

The processing for recovered carjacked vehicles is backed up five to six weeks, the police say. Carjackings are happening across the Twin Cities, spilling out into the suburbs. In Golden Valley, Minnesota they experienced five carjackings in a span of 24 hours last weekend.

Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association Decry ‘Troubling Trend’ as ‘Prosecutorial Policies are Failing to Hold Criminals Accountable’

The Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association wrote a letter to the Hennepin and Ramsey County attorneys addressing their failure to prosecute some felony crimes. They wrote that they are “especially concerned” that “prosecutorial policies are failing to hold criminals accountable for their actions.”

Minneapolis Rideshare Drivers Experiencing Spike in Robberies and Carjackings

Uber and Lyft drivers in Minneapolis are facing a slew of robberies and carjackings, Crime Watch Minneapolis reported this week.

In an article published Thursday, Crime Watch Minneapolis recounted the various incidents against rideshare drivers heard on Minneapolis police scanners since Oct. 1. The crime watchdog noted that “many of those reports have included assaults on the drivers and the use of guns in the robberies.”
